Being a parent is never easy, especially when you have children for the first time and are just learning what it's all about. While it can be filled with stress and anxiety, it is only much later that we reflect and can manage to laugh at those hard times. Unfortunately, the actions of parents can be so damaging that there are no fond reminiscing with grown children.

Once the child has reached adulthood, he or she may be quite resistant to the parents' attempts at reconciliation. No matter what age your children are, however, there are steps you can take to improve your parenting skills in a meaningful way. It may take a supreme effort to undo a shaky foundation, but we earnestly believe few things are truly impossible.

Temper tantrums are a tool that many kids use to control their parents, something you should not fall prey to. We are sure you have seen them in action, and depending on the circumstances, they can be the most trying of times. But you have to realize that young children use them as a means of gaining control over their parents. No matter how you feel, you must never let such a situation get the best of you. Simply tell them that when they are ready to settle down, then the two of you can talk about the situation. The key to making this work is to always talk with your child after they have become calm. By doing things in this matter, the children will soon learn that throwing a tantrum will not get them the things they desire. You're probably aware that there have been many recent developments and findings in the whole field of parenting and raising children. Professional and scholarly research concerning parenting and all the various issues faced has been widespread. One conclusion that many experts have come to agree on is that positive reinforcement works much better than punishment when it comes to discipline. Positive reinforcement is simply giving them positive feedback when they do something well. Parents who are more used to the mode of punishing bad behavior have to learn to readjust their focus in a new direction. While the ideal is to focus on the positive, you can't simply let inappropriate behavior pass by unnoticed. If you want to get the best results from your efforts at discipline you have to learn the right combination of these two extremes.

If children find out that they can disregard the boundaries or limits you've set up, then you'll find it very hard to get them to listen to you. Parents will sometimes tell their kids that if they do X, Y will follow but then not actually enforce Y when X occurs. You'll never be able to discipline your child effectively if all he or she has to do is cry or plead to get you to change your mind. Your children will quickly catch on and realize that they don't have to follow your rules if they know what buttons to press. The important thing is to be consistent, so that your children will learn that it's futile to try to avoid the rules and consequences you've laid down. They may not like it, but you will be teaching them a very positive lesson regarding rules and consequences. Ideally, you want to begin your journey as a parent in a way that your child never questions your love or good intentions towards them. After a while, you should be able to settle into a certain rhythm in the way you raise your kids, and then the trick is to stay on track.
