If you have been in IM for a short while, then you probably have at least heard about copywriting and what it means. If you dream of writing your own copy, then getting acquainted with copywriting principles even on a superficial level is necessary. Time, patience and diligent effort are just a few things you will need if you want to be even an average writer of sales copy.
Nobody ever became a great copywriter in a short period of time. Obviously you have to manage to have a great deal of patience, and perhaps a good way to look at it is something like going to college where you know it takes time. Some people have more inclinations to writing effective copy than others, but even someone who does not have natural talent can still make it. If you practice patience as you move ahead towards your copywriting goals, you'll see for yourself the kind of progress you're able to make. Yes, like we always say - you need a firm basis of knowledge in order to advance. You'll find tons of opportunities to learn in the future and improve your skills, only if you are patient and not hasty. You will need to get in the habit of writing in a relatively simple manner and approach. Copy appeals to the emotions of people, and generally speaking you need to write in a fairly simple manner to best accomplish that. Writing simply and clearly can be done regardless of who your audience is, and doing that is the challenge you will have to meet as a copywriter.
Look for marketing and/or copywriting forums to join, and then get to be friends with other writers. One thing that gets in the way for some people is they are not confident, and you need to have that if you want to write powerful copy. But keep in mind that no matter what you do, you have to eventually stop relying on others to help you through. There is absolutely nothing wrong in taking this step, as taking help will only increase your chances of creating better copy and improving your copywriting skills to a higher extent. If you are not a highly confident person, in general, then you have to find a way to write with confidence. If your audience, reading your copy, becomes confused about what you are trying to say, then that will not bode well for your performance. The ultimate aim of any copy is to create a strong impact, appeal to the emotions of the reader and make them want to take the required action. This will only be possible when you know your target audience like the back of your hand, and your words are specifically tailored towards them. All you ever learn in the future will be built upon your knowledge of the core principles of copywriting.
