Prior to discuss how to shingle a roof, I wish to tell you somewhat about the roofing shingles. Shingle is a thin flat rectangular shaped piece of material that is laid in rows and the rows overlap each other. The shingles are used to cover the roof or sides of a building. Shingling protects the roof and brings beauty to your home. Shingles are made up of many materials such as asphalt shingles, wood shingles, ceramic shingles and asbestos shingles. Shingling of a roof is a precise and painstaking task as a little misstep can lead to bad look and imperfection. So, if you are a roofing contractor, you must know how to shingle a roof with accurate measurements and alignments.

Now, I would like to describe how to shingle a roof. First off, go to the shingle package and read all the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Then take a chalk and draw straight lines along the length of the roof at equal distances compatible to the size of the shingles. These straight lines will enable you to keep the lines of shingles straight. In the next step, measure the equal length from bottom up to the both ends of the roof, mark them and then draw a line between the two marks. Begin the first course with a full shingle. After that you need to cut 6" off of each shingle. In the second course shingle will be 6" less than that in the first course and so on. The process is carried out until only single tab is left. Then start over with a full shingle and repeat the whole process.

Four nails are placed per shingle- one at the each end and two on the cutouts. Begin the first course with full shingle placed over the starter strip and place the nails. Place the next shingle along the bottom edge and affix nails to the shingle. Continue to work in the same manner with second, third courses and so on. But begin each next course with a shingles 6" less than that used in the immediate earlier course.

In nutshell, installing roofing shingles is a highly precise project and demands the professionals with broadened knowledge and experience to achieve its accurate alignments.
