I've been volunteering with Philabundance for many years. My friends and family members are, by now, accustomed to hearing me talk about the importance of volunteering. I often try to encourage people to come with me on my volunteer days and experience it for themselves, but often, people are quick to tell me that they simply don't have the time to volunteer. While I understand why people might say this, I also have a bit of a different take on the issue.

I have a full-time job with a credit union. I'm in risk assessment, which means I do the hard work of predicting what the markets will do and I come up with plans to help my company avoid risk. I also do some computer work to ensure that the loan process runs smoothly. This sort of work keeps me extremely busy, and I'm often running about from place to place all day long while I'm at work.

I am also a student, working toward a masters of jurisprudence degree in corporate law and business finance. My graduate-level classes are quite challenging, and often, I am immersed in mountains of homework when I am not physically sitting in class. Advancing my education takes a lot of time and effort, but it's something I'm willing to do as I think it will help me advance my career.

So, I'm a pretty busy person. Even so, I find the time to volunteer. I set aside time every month to head to the Philabundance site and work. I think of it as an appointment, and I make sure not to miss it. Many people think that volunteering means that you must give up huge portions of each and every week. That's totally not true. Philabundance is happy with even a few hours spent here and there, and it is time almost anyone is able to donate. I never have a problem with finding the time.

In return for my sacrifice of time, I get a huge benefit. I'm helping the needy in our community, the people who don't have the benefits I have. It makes me feel good to help other people, and it's something I really enjoy. Volunteering is a lot more fun than it might seem. I think everyone should do it.
