Dental care isn't simply about cleanings, braces, and cavities. While that may be all that dental care in the past encompassed, nowadays dental work also includes cosmetic procedures. Services such as teeth-whitening and teeth-straightening (without braces) are becoming more and more popular, mostly because significant scientific developments have made the cost of such services lower. However, keep in mind that while these procedures are cheaper than they used to be, they are rarely (if ever) covered by insurance plans. So you have to factor the cost into your decision to seek out a cosmetic dentist.

If, after examining your budget, you decide to invest in cosmetic dental work, do your research. Don't expect to simply turn to your family dentist for teeth-whitening. While he may know how to do that, he probably doesn't do it very often if he specializes in routine care. Meet with him and discuss his methods and experience with cosmetic dentistry.

If you don't think he has the expertise, ask him to recommend a colleague who specializes in cosmetic dentistry (as long as you think that the question won't offend your family dentist). If you believe that this question will bother your family dentist, check out the yellow pages for dentistry ads. Go for an ad that features cosmetic dentistry services prominently. You want someone who builds his business around these services and is a real expert. Meet with the specialist, and ask any questions you want.

Don't be afraid of taking up his time - you are going to be paying for these services so you owe it to yourself to get the best for your money. Keep in mind that you probably won't switch over to the cosmetic dentist for your routine dental care. Go to your cosmetic dentist for the work that he specializes in - cosmetic work - and stick to your family dentist for the work that is his expertise - maintenance. You will get the best of both worlds.

Keep in mind that cosmetic dentistry is not cheap (although it is less expensive than it used to be) so it is worth your while to shop around and get the best price. Meet with more than one cosmetic dentist. You may pay a minimal fee for the consult, but if you can save hundreds of dollars on the procedures, it is worth the fee. The dentist can give you a quote for the services you want, and discuss payment options. Some dentists require the entire amount up front, but most can accommodate a payment plan. In fact, many dentists already have a payment plan procedure in place - it is a simple way for them to attract business and a way for customers to afford their services.
